Icons & favicons

Icons are what make the grid scannable at a glance, so BookMark Pro puts some care into getting them right.

Automatic favicons

When you add a bookmark, BookMark Pro fetches the site’s favicon — the same small icon your browser shows in its tabs — and uses it for the grid button. In keeping with the privacy model, this request goes directly from your browser to the bookmarked site; no third-party icon service is involved.

Sometimes no favicon can be found — the site may not publish one, or it may be unreachable — and the bookmark button falls back to BookMark Pro’s own default icon instead of the site’s. When that happens, you can supply one yourself in the bookmark edit dialog:

• Paste an image URL. Find a logo or icon online — for example, right-click a site’s tab icon or logo image in your browser and choose Copy image address — then paste that URL in.
• Upload a file. If you’ve saved an image (a downloaded logo, a screenshot, anything), upload it directly instead.

Choosing a different icon

Sites often publish several icons in different sizes and styles. When adding or editing a bookmark, the icon picker discovers the candidates the site offers and shows them so you can pick the one that looks best in your grid.

When an SVG icon is available, it’s the best choice — as a vector format, it stays crisp at any size instead of blurring or pixelating like a small raster favicon scaled up.

Icons work offline

Once an icon is chosen, BookMark Pro tries to store a copy of it locally with your bookmark data rather than re-fetching it from the web each time. Your grid renders instantly and completely even with no network connection, and exports carry the icon along with the bookmark.

This isn’t always possible: if the source site blocks copying the image, BookMark Pro keeps a link to it instead of a local copy. That icon needs network access to render and won’t survive being moved to another device the way a locally-stored one does.

Folder buttons

A folder’s button is drawn as a folder shape, so folders are always instantly distinguishable from bookmarks. You can customize each folder’s look in the folder dialog:

• Stroke color — recolors the folder shape’s outline (yellow by default).
• Fill color — recolors the folder’s body, effectively the button’s background color. Together with the stroke, this makes color-coding groups of folders easy.
• Icon — an image displayed inside the folder shape. Paste an image URL or upload a file; since a folder has no website behind it, there’s no automatic icon discovery — you always supply the image yourself. The folder silhouette stays either way; the icon sits within it, like an emblem.
• Show name — toggles whether the folder’s name is displayed beneath its button, the same title-hiding option available for bookmarks.

A live preview in the dialog shows exactly how the folder button will look before you save.

Fine-tuning the look

Beyond the icon itself, each bookmark button supports a custom background color and can hide its title to show the icon alone — useful for compact, purely visual grids. Both options live in the bookmark edit dialog.
